Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) are pivotal in managing Alzheimer's disease and other dementias by impeding the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. This enzyme normally degrades acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter crucial for cognitive functions like memory and learning. In Alzheimer's, a deficit of acetylcholine arises from the loss of cholinergic neurons. AChEIs help sustain higher acetylcholine levels in the brain, offering temporary relief from cognitive symptoms such as memory loss and confusion. While they do not halt or reverse disease progression, these medications can significantly enhance quality of life. Common AChEIs include donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine, each with potential side effects like nausea and insomnia. Effective management requires ongoing monitoring and adjustments by healthcare providers to optimize therapeutic benefits.
