Dementia Epidemiology

Dementia, notably Alzheimer's Disease, presents a significant global health challenge. Current estimates indicate approximately 50 million individuals worldwide live with dementia, with nearly 10 million new cases emerging annually. Alzheimer's Disease alone constitutes 60-70% of these cases. Age is a critical factor, with prevalence rising sharply from 5-7% among those aged 60 and older to 20-30% among individuals aged 85 and above. Regions such as North America and Western Europe report higher prevalence rates, influenced by aging populations and improved diagnostic capabilities. Beyond health impacts, dementia strains healthcare systems, caregivers, and economies. Effective management hinges on understanding demographic shifts, identifying risk factors like age and genetics, and implementing early detection measures and support systems.
