HIV Dementia

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), such as HIV dementia, disrupt cognitive functions in people living with HIV/AIDS. Unlike Alzheimer's disease, which primarily affects older adults with a gradual decline in cognitive abilities, HIV dementia can occur at any stage of HIV infection.

Symptoms of HIV dementia include memory loss, impaired concentration, motor difficulties, and changes in behavior. These symptoms arise due to HIV's ability to penetrate the central nervous system, leading to inflammation and damage to neurons. Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly reduced severe cases of HIV dementia by suppressing viral replication in the brain, mild cognitive impairment remains common and can impact daily functioning and quality of life.

Managing HIV dementia involves a comprehensive approach including ART to control viral load, supportive therapies to manage symptoms, and strategies to promote brain health through lifestyle modifications. Ongoing research continues to explore new treatments and better understand the long-term effects of HIV on cognitive function.
