Lewy Body Dementia

Lewy body dementia (LBD) distinguishes itself from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia due to the presence of abnormal protein deposits called Lewy bodies in the brain. These deposits contribute to a spectrum of symptoms encompassing cognitive decline, memory loss, and behavioral changes. What sets LBD apart are its hallmark features: vivid visual hallucinations, fluctuations in cognitive abilities, and Parkinson's-like motor symptoms such as muscle rigidity and tremors. Unlike Alzheimer’s, where memory loss predominates early stages, LBD often presents with a blend of cognitive, movement, and psychiatric symptoms right from the onset. Effective management involves a comprehensive approach, integrating medication, supportive therapies, and personalized lifestyle adjustments. Timely diagnosis and ongoing care are critical in addressing symptoms and enhancing quality of life for individuals affected by LBD.
