Neuropathology And Pathogenesis

Neuropathology and pathogenesis in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia are intricately linked to the progressive degeneration of brain tissue. AD is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, leading to neuronal dysfunction and eventual cell death. Amyloid plaques primarily consist of beta-amyloid peptides, while neurofibrillary tangles are aggregates of hyperphosphorylated tau protein. These pathological features disrupt neuronal communication and impair cognitive functions such as memory and reasoning.

The pathogenesis involves a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, although the exact mechanisms are still under investigation. Neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction also contribute to disease progression. Understanding these neuropathological changes is crucial for developing targeted therapies aimed at halting or slowing the advancement of AD and related dementias, offering hope for improved quality of life and outcomes for affected individuals.
