Neuropsychiatric Symptoms

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia encompass a broad spectrum of behavioral and psychological changes. These can include agitation, aggression, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, and sleep disturbances, among others. NPS significantly impact the quality of life for both patients and caregivers, often complicating care management and contributing to caregiver stress.

These symptoms arise from the complex neurodegenerative processes affecting the brain in Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias. They may result from structural and chemical changes in the brain, including neurotransmitter imbalances and the formation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Effective management involves a multidimensional approach, including pharmacological treatments, behavioral interventions, caregiver education, and creating a supportive environment. Understanding and addressing NPS are crucial for improving patient outcomes and enhancing the overall caregiving experience in dementia care settings.
